Red Oak runner-up at Griswold meet

 GRISWOLD — Highlighted by a main-event win in the 4x400, the Red Oak girls track and field team claimed runner-up at the Griswold Tigers Relays last Tuesday at Griswold High School.

Red Oak won four titles at the meet as they recorded a score of 107. Kuemper Catholic won the “AA” division of the meet with a score of 131.

The 4x400 team featuring Juhi Boeye, Sydney Streicher, Paige Shirley and Kate Walker claimed the title with a time of 4:28.94. Boeye stormed ahead during the opening leg, allowing Streicher, Shirley and Walker to hold on and get the win.

Boeye was also a key relay runner in the sprint medley as she helped them finish second with a time of 2:03.36. Boeye was part of the team with Sierra Athen, Hannah Vial and Michaela Buntrock.

Red Oak’s other two wins came courtesy of Walker, who won both the 1,500 and 800 in dominating fashion. In the 1,500, Walker won by more than 30 seconds with a time of 5:25.99. Southwest Valley’s Elizabeth Fuller was third with 6:15.68.

In the 800, Walker won by 12 seconds over Haley Grote of Kuemper Catholic as the senior won with a time of 2:34.31.

Walker came close to a third win in the 400-meter dash, but finished second (1:02.16) behind Emma Bonnet of Underwood.

The fourth win for Red Oak came courtesy of Streicher, who won the long jump with a jump of 15’2.50”. Boeye was third with 14’11.50”.

Athen was second in shot put with 30’9”. Tatum Allensworth was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 25’1.25”. Emma Ross was fourth in the discus with 88’1”.

In the other relay events, Red Oak finished third in the 4x100 (Michaela Buntrock, Athen, Hannah Vial and Streicher running 55.93), fourth in the shuttle hurdles (Morgan Akers, Boeye, Shirley and Streicher running 1:21.55) and fourth in the distance medley (Buntrock, Hailey Fada, Shirley and Brower running 5:25.92).

Southwest Valley meanwhile was fifth in the AA division with a score of 75. The Timberwolves had one win and a couple of second place finishes.  

Kendra Top won the 3,000 when she ran a time of 13:30.38. Red Oak’s Ashley Brower (13:39.61) and Sydney Straw (14:19.68) were second and third in the race.

Kaylea Wiechman had one of those second place finishes in the 100-meter dash when she ran a time of 13.80.

Elizabeth Herzberg finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.57.

Class A

It was host school Griswold cruising to a win in the “A” division when they won with a score of 183. Essex finished fourth in the division with a score of 87.

Griswold won seven events at their home meet, with two each won individually by Rebekah Topham and Alyx Flippin.

Topham won the 800 (2:19.62) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:10.06). Also in the 800, Essex’s Kelsi Leininger was fourth with 2:48.33 and Anna Young of Griswold was fifth with 2:48.74. In the 400-meter hurdles, Topham’s teammate Jessica Marshall was runner-up with 1:15.55 and Essex’s Sara Skalberg took fourth with 1:22.43.

Flippin meanwhile won the 3,000 (11:20.98) and 1,500 (5:19.50). In the 3,000, Young (13:07.16) was the runner-up for Griswold, while Essex’s Devan Gray (13:29.13) and Abbie Lindburg (13:48.24) were fourth and fifth.

Griswold also scored two wins in the field events, thanks to Jackie Rush and Mykenzie Rainey. Rush won the discus with a throw of 106’4”. Teammate Kinzey Nicklaus was fourth with 80’10”. Essex’s Keegan Nelson was fifth with 78’10”.

Rainey won the shot put with a throw of 33’4.75”. Rush was runner-up with 32’10.25” and Essex’s Nelson was third with 32’8”.

Griswold’s lone relay win came in the 4x800 when the team of Alyssa Wyman, Leah Lappe, Payton Rush and Joanna Topham ran a time of 10:52.56.

The Tigers had runner-up finishes in the long jump as Jeana Freund took second with 15’5.50”. Melodie Anstey was third with 14’11”. Essex’s Jescenia Mosley was fourth with 14’10.50” and Daiton Martin was sixth with 14’3.50”.

Essex meanwhile scored two big wins in the relay races. They first won the 4x200 when the team of Martin, Amber Ohnmacht, Bethany Johnson and Kym Graham ran a time of 1:57.57.  The same team won the 4x100 when they ran a 54.59. Griswold was third in both races.

Essex was also second in the sprint medley when Johnson, Graham, Ohnmacht and Mosley ran a time of 2:08.43.
