ACCIDENTS
• On May 7, at 3:30 p.m., Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at 180th Street and Highway 48 north of Red Oak. Rodney Sowers, 62, driving a 2105 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling north on Highway 48. According to the report, Sowers had just been to the eye doctor and had his dilated which contributed to the accident. His vehicle crossed the center line and struck a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado owned by Shildberg Construction and driven by Jerry Funke, 39, Menlo. Damage to the Sowers vehicle was about $12,000, and damage to the Funke vehicle was about $16,000. Sowers was cited for failure to yield half of roadway.
• On May 7, at 10:50 a.m., Red Oak Police officers investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 48 and West Cherry Street. Jerome Morrissey, 64, Omaha, driving a 2002 Ford Explorer, was traveling north on Highway 48 and had stopped at the stoplight. Julie Newman, 67, Stanton, driving a 2001 Chevrolet Impala, was also traveling north behind Morrissey and, according to the report, did not see the Morrissey vehicle stopped in the road. Newman swerved to try to avoid the Morrissey vehicle, but struck it. Damage to each vehicle was about $2,000. Newman was cited for following too closely.
• On May 9, at 2:04 p.m., Red Oak Police officers investigated a one-vehicle accident at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Terrence Berigan, 60, Elliott, driving a 2016 Ford F-550 truck owned by the City of Red Oak (Red Oak Fire Department) was transporting an individual to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. According to the report, when Berigan arrived at the MCMH garage, he turned too sharply and hit the cement pillar posted to protect the garage from being hit. Damage to the truck was $5,000 and damage to the pillar was about $50.
• On May 10, at 3:25 p.m., Red Oak Police officers investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of 4th and Hammond streets. According to the report, Roger Waggener, 77, Red Oak, driving a 2015 Bluebird school bus owned by the Red Oak Community School District, was traveling west on Hammond Street and sideswiped a 2005 Chevrolet Classic owned by Marilyn Gentry, which was parked and occupied by Gentry. There were no injuries to students or the drivers of either vehicle. Damage to the bus was about $2,000, and damage to the Gentry vehicle was about $6,000. Waggener was cited for failure to maintain control.
