Red Oak falls on road at Glenwood

Glenwood blew open a 4-0 halftime lead with three goals in the opening four minutes of the second half on its way to a 10-0 win over Red Oak in Hawkeye 10 Conference girls soccer last Tuesday at the Glenwood Athletic Complex.
The Rams won the toss and elected to defend their home side leaving Red Oak an opportunity to set the tone for the game. The Tigers pushed up the field, but with a quick counter attack the Rams scored within the first minute of the game.
Red Oak never quite recovered.
“We didn’t back down and did our best, getting in good passes and great defensive stops only to concede another goal in the ninth minute,” said Red Oak coach Dion Coffey. “The girls looked their absolute best today and were able to head to half only down 4-0 to the Rams. With utmost positivity and determination, the Tigers wanted it badly in the second half.”
The Rams came out after halftime and scored their fifth, sixth and seventh goals all in a four and a half minute spurt to open the half.
The game ended 10-0 on a penalty kick in the 64th minute.
“I’m very proud of how hard and determined we were as a unit,” Coffey said. “It felt like everyone was playing for one another and had each other’s back. The improvement was truly incredible.”
Coffey commended the play of Bryleigh Mauer and Mareli Ramos in the midfield and the many players he had step up into huge roles despite it being their first year playing.
Brielle Allmon led the Rams with three goals. Skylar Odorizzi added two goals and Abby Hargens, Emily Wragge, Micah Smith, Makensie Barrett and Sophia Pratt added a goal each.

Harlan 9,
Red Oak 1
Red Oak notched its first goal of the season but Harlan won the war 9-1 in a Hawkeye 10 Conference boys soccer showdown at Russ Benda field last Monday.

The Cyclones played a very methodical first half, according to Red Oak coach Mark Kells, as they extended their lead to 4-0 and then 5-0 with just 17 seconds remaining in the half on Tiger defensive breakdown.
“As we came out of half, we had the wind in our favor but just couldn’t put a rally together at the start of the whistle as the Cyclones put the heat on us,” Kells said.
The Cyclones scored three quick goals in the opening six minutes of the second half.
Red Oak finally settled down following that early barrage and Pace Chaillie found the back of the net at the 19th minute to cut it to an 8-1.
