Fillies stop Timberwolves in five sets

Southwest Valley closed out is regular season with a tough, five-set loss to Shenandoah 25-14, 20-25, 20-25, 25-15, 8-15 in non-conference volleyball Thursday in Corning.
“The girls started off strong in the first set, unfortunately we couldn’t find that rhythm in the second and third sets,” said Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks. “We bounced back in the fourth taking the match to set five but came up short.”
Lyndie Green had 16 kills and Kalyn Scamman 12 to lead the Shenandoah attack.
Ray Helvie had 21 kills, 16 digs and three blocks for the Timberwolves (22-7 overall, 8-3 in the Pride of Iowa Conference).
Mackenzie Fast chipped in 12 kills and 9 aces and Elin Hogan recorded 32 set assists.
Ada Lund led the defense with 26 digs.
The Timberwolves (22-7) faced off against Underwood (11-18) in Monday’s Class 2A, Region 7 first round. Results can be found for that match in next week’s paper.

Timberwolves third at POI tournament
Southeast Warren swept to a 25-19, 25-13, 25-14 victory over Southwest Valley in the semifinals of the Pride of Iowa Conference volleyball tournament last Tuesday in Martensdale.
The Warhawks hit .255 with 38 kills as a team while the Timberwolves never quite seemed to get into rhythm offensively. They notched 25 kills but hit just .052 as a team.
“They (Southeast Warren) did a great job at serving aggressively enough to keep us out of system and took the first game in three sets,” said Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks.
Ray Helvie led the Timberwolves with 11 kills. Mackenzie Fast added nine kills and Elin Hogan paced the offense with 24 set assists.
With the loss, Southwest Valley fell to the consolation match where they knocked off the host Blue Devils 25-15, 25-11, 25-16 to finish third in the conference tournament.
“I was very proud with how the girls mentally focused after a loss and were able to take them in three straight sets to take third place in the conference this year,” Sparks said.
Helvie knocked down 16 kills and two blocks in the win. Fast added 11 kills and nine aces.
Hogan dished up 24 set assists to go with seven digs.

Southwest Valley opened Pride of Iowa Conference Tournament play with a 25-22, 25-18, 25-9 win over Central Decatur last Monday in Corning.
“We started off slow, but once we had our focus and purpose we settled in and took the win in three straight sets,” said Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks. “I am very proud of the defense and aggressive serving the team had.”
The No. 3 seeded Timberwolves hit .202 as a team with 30 kills on the night.
Mackenzie Fast smacked 13 kills and Ray Helvie chipped in 11 kills, three aces and four blocks.
Setter Elin Hogan dished up 20 assists and Ada Lund led the defense with 19 digs.
