RO native Bell receives heroism award

A former Red Oak Boy Scout was recently honored for his heroism.
Ethan Bell is the son of Tyler and Ranju Bell, nd grandson of Jack Bell of Red Oak. Tyler currently resides with his family in Colorado Springs, Colo. Ethan was recently presented with the Heroism Award from the Boy Scouts at a special ceremony Aug. 18. The medal is awarded for saving or attempting to save a life at little to no personal risk, demonstrating courage, skill, and the practical use of Scouting ideals.
In August, 2025, while doing his mile swim attempt at summer camp, Ethan responded to an emergency when his lifeguard safety overwatch suffered a seizure and overturned his kayak in the water. Despite the cold conditions and early morning visibility, Ethan recognized the situation, pulled the lifeguard from beneath the kayak, and used the head-support tow method to keep his airway above the water.
Unable to move him to shore due to his size, he called for help, prompting a rapid response from other nearby lifeguards and the aquatics director. After getting to shore, the victim regained consciousness in a short period. The victim received on-site medical care, and was transported for further evaluation before returning to camp later that day.
With compiled witness statements from the aquatics staff and camp leadership, it was confirmed that the swift and coordinated respones, initiated by Ethan’s immediate actions, were critical in preventing serious injury or a potentially fatal outcome.
The award was presented in the name of Scouting America. In order to be honored with such an award, an application must be made and approved by the local Scout Council with approval of Scouting America’s National Court of Honor.
