Viqueens win big over Clarinda Academy

STANTON—The Stanton Viqueens picked up their first win of the season, by defeating the Clarinda Academy Eagles, 86-25, Friday night.

Stanton thrashed the Eagles for 56 points in the second half, which included a 31-point third quarter effort.

“We just picked up a little bit defensively, I think our intensity was much better in the second half and that almost seemed to get our offense going a little bit,” Viqueens Head Coach Bruce Subbert said.

The Viqueens aggressive press defense gave up zero points to Clarinda Academy during the entire third quarter, forcing turnovers and quick fastbreak opportunity points.

“We switched a couple of things up, it was pretty much the same press, but I think we were just a little more intense in the second half,” Subbert said.

Stanton allowed just 10 points in the fourth quarter. The Eagles scored five points early in the quarter, but then Stanton went on a 16-0 run before Clarinda Academy could score another point.

Fouls were an issue for Clarinda Academy early, as they put the Viqueens into the bonus with five minutes remaining in the first quarter. Stanton led 31-16 at halftime.

Carmen Subbert finished the night as the leading scorer. The sophomore scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds, giving Subbert a double-double for the game.

Stanton had a total of 60 rebounds for the game.

Ragen Anderson also finished with double-digit points, as she scored 12 on 5-for-13 shooting, as well as five steals.

Rachel Sorensen had nine points, while Kara Allen recorded eight for the Viqueens and each finished with eight rebounds.

Subbert said he wanted to see improvement from his team, since the game to Bedford, 55-35, Nov. 22.

“I don’t know if we saw that much in the first half, but in the second half it was nice to see them come out a little better, shoot the ball a little better,” Subbert said.

Stanton is now 1-1 to start the season. The Viqueens will be home this Thursday night as they host the Shenandoah Fillies.
