Tigers take ninth at SWV meet

 CORNING — The Red Oak girls’ track and field team recorded several top finishes as they took ninth with a score of 20 at Thursday’s Timberwolf Girls Invitational at Southwest Valley High School in Corning.

Griswold finished third at the meet with 80 points, while Southwest Valley tied for seventh with 35 points. Stanton was 10th with eight points and East Mills took 11th with four points. Shenandoah won the meet.

Red Oak ran without distance runner Kate Walker, who was competing in tennis at Lewis Central. The Tigers did record several top five finishes, including a runner-up in the 400-meter dash when Juhi Boeye took second with a time of 1:05.68. Teammate Nikki Graber was about a second back in third place with 1:06.53.

Boeye also had a sixth place finish in the 200-meter dash as she won her heat with a time of 29.17, edging out Graber who had 29.88.

Ashley Brower also had a points finish when she took fifth in the 3,000 with a time of 13:00.15.

The top points finish in the relay races came in the 4x400 when the team of Graber, Paige Shirley, Hannah Vial and Boeye took fifth with a time of 4:41.04. The sprint medley team of Michaela Buntrock, Sierra Athen, Vial and Graber took sixth with 2:07.86.

Red Oak was back in action Monday for the Ram Relays.

Griswold

It was once again Alyx Flippin’s time to shine. Flippin won three individual titles at the Timberwolf Girls Invitational.

The first win for Flippin came in the 3,000 when she won with a time of 11:29.28, beating out Nodaway Valley’s Destiny Scar by 18 seconds.

Flippin also defeated Nodaway Valley’s Scar in the 1,500 by nine seconds as she won with a time of 5:18.52. Teammate Alyssa Wyman was third with 5:46.69.

The third win for Flippin came in the 800 when she held off Scar by nearly four seconds to win with a time of 2:33.69. Zena Courtier (2:44.55) of East Mills was fifth, while Griswold teammate Anna Young (2:46.12) was sixth.

Griswold also had strong finishes in the field events by Jackie Rush, who was third in the discus with a throw of 99’10” and fourth in the shot put with 30’0.5”. It was teammate Mykenzie Rainey who was runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 32’8.75”.

The best relay race finish for Griswold came in the 4x800 when the team of Young, Wyman, Payton Rush and Leah Lappe took second with a time of 10:56.73.

Griswold was without Rebekah Topham for the meet, who was scheduled to compete in three races (3,000, 1,500 and 800) at the Drake Relays, but illness kept her from competing.

Southwest Valley

The Timberwolves didn’t get a win at their meet. Their best finish was second in the 400-meter hurdles as Elizabeth Herzberg ran with a time of 1:13.73, finishing four seconds behind Shenandoah’s Sydney Nielsen.

Southwest Valley finished third in the 4x400 when the team of Oakley Goodvin, Herzberg, Elizabeth Fuller and Kelsey Means ran a time of 4:37.84.

Stanton

The best finish for the Viqueens came in the shuttle hurdles when the team of Logan Wagg, Ally Focht, Lauren Stephens and Chelsea Weis finished third with a time of 1:14.05. Weis also had a sixth place finish in the long jump with 14’11”.

The distance medley team also scored points for Stanton as the team of Weis, Abbi Adams, Focht and Brandy Morrison took sixth with 5:09.68.
