T’Wolves fall short in opener versus Clarinda
CORNING — The Southwest Valley varsity golf teams began the season Thursday afternoon with non-conference losses to the Clarinda Cardinals at the Happy Hollow Country Club.
The girls’ match-up was a closer margin as they lost 196-218 to the Cardinals.
Clarinda claimed both the medalist and the runner-up in the girls meet as Maddy Davidson shot a 43 to lead the way. Kayla Long shot a 49 to claim the runner-up spot.
Taylor Damewood was the top golfer for the Southwest Valley girls, narrowly missing out on medaling as she finished with a 51.
Both Kim Hults and Bellamy Heaton were right behind Damewood, each recording a 52.
Kiara Roberts and Janelle Gibler each shot a 63, while Danica Sunderman finished with a 74.
The other notable scorers for Clarinda were Grace Davidson (51), Cori Bebout (53), Lexi Brown (56) and Carly Rahn (65).
In the boys match-up, Southwest Valley lost 161-195. Three of Southwest Valley’s six varsity golfers shot better than 50 in their nine-hole round.
Ryan Carlson was the top golfer for the Timberwolves with a 44. Both Cole Swenson and Scott Vanderhoof finished with 48s. Lane Peterson had a 55, Ryan Allison shot a 58 and Jeff Walton shot a 63.
Clarinda claimed the medalist and runner-up for the boys team. Carlton Rahn shot a 36, while Benton Bielfeldt had a 38. The other top golfers were Connor Pirtle with a 43, Bryce Neal shooting a 44 and Travis McGregor shooting a 48.
The T’Wolves get back to work this week with three meets and one tournament in a span of six days. It all began Monday at the Happy Hollow Country Club when Southwest Valley hosted CAM. Results from the meet weren’t available as of press time.
Southwest Valley is home again Tuesday as they host East Union. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
Both teams are home once more for the week Thursday when they host Bedford and Sidney. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
Finally, the Southwest Valley girls’ team will travel to Sidney to compete at a tournament Saturday. The tournament is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start.
