Stanton library receives $30,000 grant

STANTON — The Iowa West Foundation, headquartered in Council Bluffs, has announced $3.95 million in grants for the third quarter of 2012.

The grants will be used to assist 43 non-profit organizations and governmental entities with funding for area projects.  

The City of Stanton was awarded a $30,000 grant for new furnishings for a new community library that is planned to be built in 2013.

According to Jerry Gilliland, the Stanton librarian, the City of Stanton in conjunction with Stanton Friends and members of our community, have planned and raised money to construct a 25,350 square-foot complex – known as the Stanton Viking Center – to house a public library, preschool, multi-purpose community room with a catering kitchen, wellness facility, gymnasium, and FEMA-approved storm shelter to meet the educational and health needs of area residents.  

“This grant assures furnishings for the library,” Gilliland said.

The Stanton Viking Center is slated for final bid-letting in January of 2013, with construction slated to begin in April 2013.  According to preliminary bid estimates, organizers are about $260,000 – or 9 percent -- from reaching the overall construction cost goal.

The City of Stanton is extremely close to providing these services to the community.
