Wintery weather wreaks havoc on sports

Red Oak boys golf hosted Glenwood on Tuesday, April 5, on a cold and rainy day. Above, golfers are dressed for the weather as they get set to putt.

The spring sports schedule was modified last week due to windy, cold, drizzly, and snowy conditions which began on Tuesday, April 5.

What began with 23 sporting activities on the weekly schedule ended with 12 events and an additional two tennis matches moved to the Montgomery County YMCA.

Tuesday’s drizzle and cold did not stop the Red Oak golfers, Red Oak tennis, or Clarinda girls relays from happening. But Thursday’s gusting winds and rainy conditions canceled three track meets, two golf meets, and an all boys track meet for Friday, April 8.

No matter what the weather, the spring sports are officially underway, and area teams are practicing, if not competing, in modified places.

Field houses, country clubs, gymnasiums, and the YMCA were all used last week either for golf simulators, tennis, or running; the athletes moved inside to keep their training going.

With a holiday and 19 activities on this week’s schedule, here’s hoping to a more spring-like week.
