Signatures sought for RO ballot petitions

The Red Oak School Board needs petition signers.

At the last school board meeting, the board approved the language to include on a ballot for the school bond issue on renovating the high school and Inman Primary facilities.

Board member Kathy Walker said in order to get the bond issue on the June 27 ballot, they need a total of 811 signatures.

“Community members will be going around requesting signatures to get enough signatures to post on the ballot,” Walker said.

Petition signers have to be registered voters of the Red Oak School District. Sheets are also posted at the movie theater, the hospital, and with Dave Carbaugh at Heartland Insurance at 300 E. Coolbaugh St.

Walker emphasized that the signatures are only to get the bond issue onto the ballot.

“Once it’s on the ballot, people are free to vote however they want. Just because they sign it, it doesn’t mean that they’re for it,” said Walker.

The high number of petition signatures is due to the high voter turnout at the last election..

“We need 25 percent of the votes cast in the last election. That was the presidential election. We had 3,246 voters in the last election, so this number is 25 percent of that,” Walker explained.

The signatures must be collected by May 5. The board will move forward at their regular meeting
