Setting a Bigger Stage
The Red Oak Park and Tree board moved forward on plans for a new stage at Fountain Square Park.
The board met with Alley Poyner Macchietto architect Daric O’Neal, who discussed concept options for a new stage for the board to consider.
Based on master plan discussions, the goals were to have a bigger stage area which was covered; fully handicapped-accessible; double-sided, to play to the park and the street; audio and lighting improvements; and potentially included restrooms.
“The structure has an inverted roof, which allows a better scenario for rigging lights and extra speakers. The design is such that if you have a bigger act come in with a structure piece with speakers and additional lighting, you can add that to this. It also has a small electrical room, and there is space for two bathrooms, one on either side. They are not big restrooms, only single stall on either side based on this design,” O’Neal explained.
The rear panels of the structure can be moved, to allow visibility for the Junction Days or Homecoming parade.
Red Oak Mayor Bill Billings, in attendance at the meeting, said the concept design for the stage met a variety of goals.
“We need restrooms downtown badly. This is something that can be used for regular entertainment events, and it would be advantageous during Junction Days to have everything contained into the square and not have to move venues.
“My hope would be to see this project get done next spring, and a ribbon cutting in conjunction with Junction Days, 2018. This is an opportunity to finish off a big portion of the square project, and benefit the community,” said Billings.
Board member Jessica Demarce felt the plan should be approved as presented. The board approved a motion to accept the plan, and move forward with bids on the project, and to accept the services of Alley Poyner Macchietto to create bidding documents for the project.
Estimated cost of the project is $90,000 to $115,000.
The board also held discussion on a wheelchair accessible swing set. A quote was given of $1,635 for one bay, and $2,491 for two bays, including the frame and swing. DeMarce said she felt they should consider additional options and make the project larger. Further discussion is scheduled for the next park and tree board meeting.
