School looking for Gold Fair building alternative
The Red Oak School District may be looking at alternatives for one of the proposed locations to use as classrooms during the high school renovations.
One of the locations proposed for serving lunch and certain classes, the Gold Fair building, may not be suitable due to regulations.
“There are different sets of guidelines for use for a building for a school, versus a public venue. The guidelines to use the building as a classroom are much more rigorous than using it for public use,” Messinger said.
He added there were a couple of different items that would need to be addressed before it could be used by the school.
“There’s a requirement of a fire wall between where the trailers are stored and the main building, a six foot wide entrance or exit on the south side of the building, as well as a fire alarm monitoring system in place there. I’ve spoken with the fair board and they are looking to see what the cost of adding those items on to the building would be,” commented Messinger.
As for the other locations, Messinger said they had encountered no issues.
“We do still have things ironed out with the Wilson Performing Arts Center and the YMCA, as far as where lunch would be served, and a couple of our classes, we’re looking at ways to see what would be the most const-efficient way to move forward on that.”
While the Gold Fair building currently can not be used, Messinger said it has not been entirely ruled out until it is determined what it would take to bring it up to the level it could be used.
Messinger said it has been determined that it’s not possible to use the tech center for all the classrooms requiring space. Messinger said they are looking at the middle school as a possible location to hold the overflow classes from the high school during the renovations.
Messinger said for central office space, they were proposing using the second for of the CNR Graphics building, behind Bank Iowa.
“The whole second floor we can rent at a fee of $1,200 per month. That includes utilities. It has enough space for all of our office and a space for storing confidential records. We’ve not been asked for any type of long-term lease.”
Messinger said plans would be to start moving the central office over to the side on April 15, and it was a more reasonable cost than the other location the school had looked at for central office space. Bancroft will be used to house the maintenance department.
The board unanimously approved the rental agreement for central office space.
