School election Tuesday

\Voters in Montgomery County and the surrounding area will head out to the polls Tuesday, Sept. 12, to vote in the upcoming school board elections.

There are no races on the ballot in Red Oak, but there is a contest in Stanton.

Red Oak

The Red Oak School Board race is uncontested, with three at-large positions open. Incumbents Bret Blackman and Kathy Walker are running for re-election, while Roger Carlson is running for the third board seat.

Stanton

The Stanton district has a contested race for its at-large openings, with four candidates running for the three open spots. Incumbents Brian Bates and Mark Lindgren are running for re-election, challenged by Travis Taylor and Amy Tibben.

Villisca

The at-large race in the Villisca School District is uncontested, with incumbent Leland Shipley running unopposed along with candidate Terry Dalton.

Four candidates are running for the SWCC board of directors. Incumbents Dennis Davis, District One, Jerry Smith, District Three, Zach Gunsolley, District Six, and newcomer Kevin Britten, District Five.

A public measure is also on the ballot for SWCC:

Shall the Board of Directors of Southwestern Community College in the counties of Adair, Adams, Taylor, Montgomery, Ringgold, Decatur, Clarke, Union, Madison, Lucas, Pottawattamie, Wayne and Page be authorized to continue to levy a tax not exceeding six cents per thousand dollars of assessed value in any one year, as provided in Iowa Code Section 260C.28, for a period not to exceed ten consecutive years beginning July 1, 2018 for the purpose of the purchase of instructional equipment?

In the Griswold School Board race, three candidates are running uncontested for the three board positions. Incumbent Robert Peterson, and newcomers Bruce Brunk, and Aaron Houser.

In the Essex School District, only one candidate is named on the ballot for the two open at-large positions on the board, incumbent Dustin Frank.

Polls in Griswold and Essex are also open from noon to 8 p.m.
