Red Oak woman knits hats for homeless

REDee^OAK — A local woman has found her own way to help less fortunate people during the winter.
Judy Schooling, 64, helps keep homeless people warm during the harsh winter months.
“I make knit hats all year and then in the wintertime I send boxes of them to homeless shelters,” she said.
This is the third year that Schooling has taken on this philanthropic project.
She has a list of homeless shelters and sends a box to a different one each year in Iowa or the Omaha area.
There are usually 24 hats in a box and she sends a box or two each year.
“I like making the (hats).” Schooling said.
“I’ve just seen the homeless people on TV and they don’t have any place to get in where it’s warm sometimes, so they need something to keep them warm.”
It takes about a day to make a hat, but Schooling enjoys making them, as well as helping people.
She started doing this because she herself wanted a knit hat.
“I made one for myself first and it was so warm. I just thought that somebody else might like to have one too.”
Schooling buys lots of yarn when it goes on sale, but not all the hats are the same.
“I get all different colors because different people like different ones,” she said.
