Red Oak takes eighth at Mustang Relays
SHENANDOAH — The Red Oak boys track and field team took eighth out of 14 teams competing at the Mustang Relays last Monday in Shenandoah.
Red Oak had a team score of 36 points, edged out of seventh by Griswold, who had 37.5. Southwest Valley was sixth with 43, East Mills was ninth with 31 and Essex took 13th with 10 points.
Glenwood won the meet with a score of 171.
The lone win for Red Oak came in the 3,200 when Josh Sunberg and Logan LeRette took the top two spots of the race. Sunberg won with a time of 10:33.57, while LeRette was second with 10:35.19. David Thompson of Griswold took fourth with a time of 11:00.27.
Sunberg also had a sixth place finish in the 1,600 as he ran a 5:01.18. Cody McClintock of Essex finished fourth in the 1,600 with a time of 4:55.43, edged out of the top three at the finish line by Fremont-Mills’ Jason Rusten.
Red Oak scored its remaining points in the relay races. Their best finish came in the distance medley when the team of Hayden VanMeter, Brock Isaacson, Rob Vial and Logan LeRette took third with a time of 3:53.26.
Griswold finished one spot ahead of Red Oak as the team of Derek Kirchhoff, Aaron Metheny, Wyatt Robinette and Jordan Vetter ran a time of 3:52.84. East Mills’ team of Cavin Darnold, Ben Christensen, Austin Edmunds and Noah Meyer took sixth in the race with a time of 4:01.95.
Red Oak also had a fourth-place finish in the 4x200 when VanMeter, Dylan Graber, Vial and Isaacson ran a time of 1:38.66.
Southwest Valley’s team of Garrett Seals, Wyatt McAlpin, Tyler Bissell and Scott Vanderhoof took sixth, while East Mills was seventh and Griswold finished eighth.
Red Oak took fifth in the 4x100 as the team of VanMeter, Graber, Eli Guerra and Isaacson ran a time of 46.47.
Southwest Valley
The Timberwolves had a few notable finishes at the Mustang Relays, including a tie for third in the high jump for Scott Vanderhoof, who had a jump of 5’8”.
Southwest Valley also had a third place finish in the 4x800 when the team of McAlpin, Trevor Sorensen, Phillip Currin and Lane Peterson ran a time of 9:10.46.
The 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relay teams also took a fourth place finish.
Griswold
In addition to their second place finish in the distance medley, Griswold took third in the shuttle hurdles when the team of Kirchhoff, Andy Hartman, Tyler DeWitt and Jordan Vetter ran a time of 1:04.29.
East Mills
The Wolverines had a couple of key highlights, including a second place finish in the 400-meter dash for Noah Meyer. Meyer was less than a second behind Jacob Carlson of Clarinda, running a time of 54.14.
Sam Rew meanwhile tied for third in the high jump with a jump of 5’8”.
