Red Oak tennis opens season with pair of wins
Both Red Oak tennis teams began the 2015 season picking up a couple wins.
The most recent wins came Thursday when Red Oak defeated Southwest Valley.
It was the first home meet for the girls as they won 9-0. The boys’ team won their match in Corning 8-1.
All the girls’ singles matches were one set to six games, while doubles were one set to eight. Grace Blomstedt was the No. 1 seed for the girls team as she defeated Kendra Wilkinson 6-0. Micayla Taylor, Sarah Behrens and Bailey Bruce also scored 6-0 wins. Taylor defeated Sydney Dimmler, Behrens defeated Jade Petersen and Bruce defeated Ashtyn Grossnickle.
MaKayla LeRette won 6-1 against Kayla Hartstack, while Jordyn Cornelison defeated Danielle Wetzel 6-1.
In doubles, Blomstedt and Cornelison defeated Wilkenson and Dimmler 8-3.
Taylor and Bruce defeated Petersen and Hartstack 8-0 and Behrens and LeRette won 8-0 over Grossnickle and Wetzel.
The boys’ matches were all one set to eight games. Weston Rolenc got things going with an 8-1 win over Trevor Holbrook. Keatis Kunze defeated Charlie Marina 8-4, while Dean Smith defeated Nic Frede 8-2. Jesse Taylor defeated Johnathan Kinser 8-1 and Sean Griffen defeated Bryce Newton 8-6.
The lone win for Southwest Valley came courtesy of Dalton Davis, who defeated Donnie Torbett 8-6.
In doubles, Rolenc and Smith defeated Holbrook and Frede 8-1. Kunze and Torbett defeated Marina and Davis 8-6. Taylor and Griffen defeated Kinser and Newton 8-6.
Audubon meet
The boys picked up their first win of the season when they defeated the Wheelers 8-1 last Tuesday at Audubon.
Rolenc defeated Bradley Nissen 8-3, while Kunze defeated Kalissa Nolamayne 8-1. Torbett won 8-1 against Dustin Mennenoh. Taylor and Griffen both won 8-0 against their respective opponents. Taylor defeated Daniel Schneider, while Griffen defeated Kyle Polson. The lone win for Audubon came in singles as Shamus Card won against Smith 9-7.
In doubles, Rolenc and Kunze defeated Nissen and Nolamayne 9-7.
Smith and Torbett defeated Card and Mennenoh 8-0, while Taylor and Griffen defeated Schneider and Mitchell Nelson 8-0.
Kuemper Catholic meet
It was a split meet for both Red Oak teams as the girls won and the boys lost.
The girls were in Carroll and won 9-0. Kate Walker got her win in the No. 1 seed spot as she defeated Bailey Nichols 8-3. Blomstedt defeated Madeline Schularte 8-0, the only shutout in singles for Red Oak.
Taylor defeated Cora Hicks 8-1, which was also the same score for Behrens as she defeated Maria Dentlinger. LeRette defeated Jodie Knobbe 8-5 and Bruce won 9-8 (5) over Anne Steffes.
In doubles, Walker and Bruce defeated Nichols and Schularte 8-3. Blomstedt and LeRette defeated Hicks and Dentlinger 8-1. Taylor and Behrens completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Knobbe and Steffes.
The boys meanwhile lost 6-3. Rolenc and Smith picked up the only wins in singles for Red Oak. Rolenc rallied from behind to defeat Tyler Schroeder 10-8, while Smith defeated Reed Rawlings 10-8.
The lone doubles win for Red Oak came when Smith and Taylor defeated Matt Dentlinger and Connor Whlenkamp 7-6 (5).
The girls team is 2-0, while the boys are 2-1.
Both teams were scheduled to be back in action Monday as they hosted Glenwood. Results weren’t available as of press time.
Tuesday, the boys will be home and the girls on the road as they face Shenandoah. The meets are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
The boys are home again for meets against Lewis Central and St. Albert. The boys play St. Albert at 12:30 p.m. and then play Lewis Central at 4:30 p.m.
The girls will be on the road playing Lewis Central as that meet starts at 4:30 p.m.
