Mackey chosen for American Legion Auxiliary Girls State

Crystal Mackey, of Stanton, was selected by Unit 406 to attend the annual session of the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, June 19-24, on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames.

Iowa Girls State citizens set up their own City, County and State governments and administer them according to the laws of Iowa. They also participate in legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating and voting and have opportunity to obtain deeper knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

In addition to political activities, Mackey heard several motivational speakers and local and state government officials. She was also invited to be present for the Inauguration of newly elected state officials on June 24.

Mackey has completed her junior year at Stanton High School, and is the daughter of Thomas and Roxann Osher. She participates in the Pep Club, Mamrelund CYO, track and as yearbook co-editor.

Mackey was chosen because of her interest, leadership and scholastic qualities. Past participants include Jane Pauley, NBC news broadcast journalist, Ann Richards, former Governor of Texas and Brigadier General Michelle Johnson, the first woman to serve as Cadet Wing Commander at the U.S. Air Force Academy, now serving at the Pentagon.
