'Spring into Spring' Garden Symposium in Malvern March 25
The Mills County Master Gardeners will be hosting the “Spring into Spring” Garden Symposium, Saturday, March 25, 2023, at The Lakin Center, located on the Mills County Fairgrounds at 61321 315th St., Malvern, Iowa 51551
This will be a full day of Horticultural Education for all Gardeners! It is open to gardeners of all ages and abilities and will feature five speakers.
Our speakers include; Max Miller, who will be giving a presentation on Bonsai. After his presentation, Max will be available all day doing Bonsai deminstations with participants in attendance.
Donna Brahms will talk to us about the Importance of Honey Bees. She and her husband Mike began 3 Bee Farms, their family own orchard. They started with honey being the main product along with beeswax by-products. In 2009, Mike and Donna purchased the Glen Robin Orchard. Since the purchase, the orchard has become a place for family gathering, agri-tourism and education, fall fun including the pumpkin patch and corn maze, and a hot spot for local produce.
Delton Lyden is the founder and co-owner of Equality Farm and Foods. Delton prides himself on living sustainably, providing locally sourced high quality and chemical free goods, food education and demonstrating equality to all living organisms. Delton operates daily at the farm wearing several hates. He enjoys working with the community on food education, preservation and spreading inclusiveness. Delton looks up to his grandmother’s heritage of food quality, preservation, gardening, humanity and strives to spread what she taught him to others.
Laura Jesse Iles is an Extension Program Specialist IV and a Director of the Plant and Insect Diagnostic Clinic at the Iowa State University. Her specialty is Insects and Plant Diseases. She will speak to us about invasive pest, including information on the new invasive, “Spotted Lanternfly.
Tim Inman is one of our very own Mills County Master Gardeners. Tim has a vast knowledge of Horticultural practices. His presentation is on the “English Walled Gardens”. He will explain how he has incorporated this style into his own Mid-West garden and give you tips on this interesting gardening style.
Various vendors will be present throughout the day along with all day demonstrations on Bonsai and Milkweed seedballs. The Conference begins with check in at 8:15 am. The first speaker begins at 9 am, and the conference will conclude at 3 pm. Refreshments and lunch are included.
