News and Notes: ROMS has strong finishes at home meet

 RED OAK — The Red Oak seventh and eighth-grade boys track teams had strong finishes at their home boys track meet Thursday.

The eighth-grade team took fourth with 44 points, while the seventh finished fifth with 28 points.

Eighth Grade Results

The eighth-grade team had two wins at the meet, including the 4x100 when the team of Isaac Birt, Isaac Bower, Carter Bruce and Caleb Schon ran 50.92 to edge out Clarinda.

Schon had the other win as he took the title in the high jump with 5’1”.  Schon additionally was third in the 100-meter dash with 12.64. Mitchell Johnson was fifth in the same race with 12.89. Johnson was also fourth in the shot put with 33’5”.

Birt meanwhile was second in the long jump with 16’7”. Birt also had a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.73. 

Bower had a third place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with 17.28.

Bruce finished third in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 29.32 and was fourth in the high jump with 5’.

In the 1,600, Jacob Cashatt took fourth with a time of 6:06.17.

Garrett Rolenc took fifth in the discus with 100’1”.

The eighth-grade team had three third place relay race finishes, including the sprint medley when Bruce, Johnson, Birt and Bower ran 2:02.14.

The 4x400 team of Gus Cooper, Hunter McMann, Ethan Stewart and Josh Baulmfaulk finished third with 5:00.56.

The 4x200 team of Fernando Rivera, Rolenc, Johnson and Schon took third with 1:55.33.

Seventh Grade Results

The seventh-grade team picked up one win during the meet as the 4x100 team of Carter Maynes, Zack Guerra, Jacob Athen and Justin McCunn ran a time of 55.08, edging out Shenandoah at the finish line.

Maynes had a second place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.21 and also took third in the long jump with 14’6.5”.

The 4x200 team of McCunn, Guerra, Athen and Maynes took second with 1:57.14.

The 4x800 team of Austin Wilkins, Aidan Eubank, Caden Hall and Connor Koppa finished third with 11:18.86.

Also finishing third was the shuttle hurdle team of Mike Noel, Brandon VanHoose, Drew Shirley and Wilkins, who ran 1:25.52.

McCunn took fourth in the discus with a throw of 85’ and also finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.05. Koppa was fourth in the 1,600 with a throw of 5:50.77.

YMCA Youth Tennis

Registration for the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s 2015 Summer Youth Tennis program, co-sponsored by the City of Red Oak Park & Tree Board, is now underway. 

All the YMCA’s Youth programs are scheduled to begin the week of June 8 and will run for six weeks at the Legion Park tennis courts. All programs meet during the morning hours and lessons last 1 hour except for Tiny Tots.

The different programs being offered are:

Tiny Tots – Youth that will be in preschool or kindergarten next fall, meets on Friday only, starting June 12. These lessons run from 9– 9:30 a.m.

NJTL – Youth entering first grade and up.  This is for beginning to intermediate level players. Youth enrolled in this program will meet twice a week. Lessons are one hour in length. 

Team Tennis – Interclub tennis program for advanced players - those players that are able to keep score and play long court. Program meets twice a week. Players will also be part of the team that competes in Omaha on Friday afternoons in the Interclub league. 

Registration deadline for the junior programs is Monday, June 1.
