Timberwolves win second straight in POI

The Southwest Valley girls basketball picked up its second straight Pride of Iowa Conference basketball victory Friday with a 57-41 win over Southeast Warren 57-41 in Corning.
A strong defensive effort carried the Timberwolves (3-11 overall, 3-7 in the conference) led to a 36-16 halftime advantage.  Southeast Warren cut the lead to 50-41 with four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but Southwest Valley closed the game on a 7-0 run.
“This was a total team effort, and we are starting to show results from all of the hard work from the girls this year,” said Southwest Valley coach Mike Cormack. “We have put up 51 and 57 points in the last two games which is due to improvement in rebounding and defense.  Those create offensive opportunities. It was fun to see how hard our girls played.
“All I can ask for is a team that gives their all and we did so tonight.  Credit to Southeast Warren for giving us everything they had in the second half, but it was great how we settled down to end the game by holding them scoreless the last four minutes of the game.”
Three Timberwolves finished in double digits for the evening.  Maddie Bevington led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Hailey Randall added 17 points and five steals.  Ada Lund contributed 10 points and seven steals.

Southwest Valley 51,
East Union 18
The Southwest Valley girls basketball played its most complete game of the season according to head coach Mike Cormack in a dominant 51-18 victory over East Union in Corning last Tuesday night.
With a 24-8 halftime lead, the Timberwolves added a 27-10 second half to play 32 minutes of solid basketball.
“Our team has been in so many close games and had so many great individual performances that haven’t shown in our record,” said Cormack. “I am proud that each and every player we had took the floor tonight and fought.  Our defense and rebounding were spectacular tonight.  That was due to great hustle and intensity by each player.  We needed a win in the worst of ways and I am proud that they came out with such a decisive performance.”
The Timberwolves got 23 points, eight rebounds and five steals from Hailey Randall.  Ada Lund had a non-traditional double-double with 11 rebounds and 11 steals to go along with six points.  Maddie Bevington added 12 points and eight rebounds and Kenzie Fast chipped in eight points and a team high 14 rebounds.
Defensively, the Timberwolves held the Eagles 20 points below their scoring average while grabbing a season-high 31 steals.
“We need to build off of this game for the rest of the season,” Cormack said.

Lenox 60,
Southwest Valley 40
Lenox led wire-to-wire in a 60-40 home win over Southwest Valley Pride of Iowa girls basketball action last Monday.
The Tigers (8-4) opened the game on a 16-4 and were in control throughout.
“We have played well in stretches of every game this year and played well enough to win many games,” said Southwest Valley coach Mike Cormack. “In this game, credit to Lenox for controlling this game in every way, shape and form. We have not had that happen over an entire game all season. This does happen to almost every team in the course of a 21-game season and tonight it was us.
“Credit to Hailey(Randall) and Ada (Lund) for double digit scoring nights for our team. I believe we will bounce back tomorrow night.”
Randall led the Timberwolves with 15 points and Lund chipped in a season-high 12 points.
Sadie Cox paced Lenox with 20 points.
