Timberwolves 3-3 at Griswold tourney

The Southwest Valley volleyball team wrapped up its day with a 3-3 record at round robin tournament in Griswold Saturday.
The Timberwolves (6-3 overall, 2-0 in the Pride of Iowa Conference) notched wins over Diagonal 21-13, 21-12, Denison 21-13, 22-20 and the host Tigers, 21-12, 11-21, 15-13. Their losses came to ACGC 22-20, 21-18, AHSTW 21-11, 21-14 and Riverside 21-13, 21-8.
“Overall, I am pleased with the day,” said Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks.
Ray Helvie had yet another solid day of volleyball for the Timberwvolves. The senior smacked down 52 kills on the day, while adding five aces and six blocks. Helvie was tabbed for the all-tournament team for the third year in a row.
Elin Hogan paced the Timberwolves offense with 65 assists in the six matches. She also added a team high 34 digs.
Mailee Templeton chipped in five aces and 25 digs and Nora Paul had seven kills.
Griswold (9-9) was also 3-3 at the tournament with wins over AHSTW 17-21, 23-21, 17-15, Denison 21-17, 21-13 and Diagonal 21-10, 21-7. Their losses came to Riverside 21-11, 21-6 and ACGC 21-18, 15-21, 8-15.

Southwest Valley improved to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Pride of Iowa Conference with a 25-14, 25-6, 25-18 win over Lenox last Tuesday.
“The girls started with focus and grit tonight playing some of the best volleyball we have seen all season,” said Southwest Valley coach Lisa Sparks. “We have little things to work out still but the progress we are making each week is promising.”
Ray Helvie had another outstanding night for the Timberwolves, smacking down a game-high 21 kills and 15 digs.
“She is playing some tough volleyball and continues to produce for us in the front row while keep the ball in system in the back row,” Sparks said.
To top the night off, Helvie surpassed 500 career kills in the victory.
Mailee Templeton added 6 kills for the Timberwolves and Elin Hogan ran the offence with 24 set assists and six of the teams’ 13 aces on the night.
