Tigers win own Paul Fish Invitational

The Red Oak boys placed four runners in the top 10 to capture the team title at its own Paul Fish Cross Country Invitational at the Red Oak Country Club last Monday.
The Tigers finished with 30 points to top runner up Shenandoah’s 48 point showing.
Clarinda’s Kyle Wagoner ran a 17:17 to win the boys race. The Tigers’ Emmanuel Grass ran a 17:50 to finish second followed by teammate Hayden Heitbrink’s third place time of 18:54.
Creston won the girls team title with a score of 31. Shenandoah’s Hailey Egbert ran a 21:40 for top honors.
The Red Oak girls did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score but were led by Maddy Lopez’s 29th place time of 28:21.
“What a great night for our runners,” said Red Oak coach Sueann French. “Our boys team came out and ran like Tigers and came home with the trophy. We saw a lot of good things and some things we need to fine tune before state qualifying. We have a few illnesses on the girls team but should be back to a full squad next week. Coach (Weston) Rolenc and I are super proud of the team and can’t wait to see what they can do.”
The Southwest Valley boys finished sixth with 169 points.
Leading the way for the third straight meet for the Timberwolves was senior Matthew Means with a 23rd place finish. His 22:40 was 1:18 faster and 15 spots higher overall than last season on the same course.
Means wasn’t alone in his improvements. Teammates Ashton Boswell finished 25th in a time of 23:08.96, improving on last year’s effort by 1:47 and 26 places. Lucas James showed the biggest improvement for the third straight meet with a 49th place finish in a time of 26:43.18, an improvement of 3:10 and 11 positions from last season.
“Matthew, Ashton, and Lucas have really shown a lot of improvement in these early meets and that has helped boost their confidence tremendously,” said Southwest Valley coach Jason Hults.
The Stanton girls finished fifth with a score of 129. All five Viqueen place winners ran personal bests.  Lauren Roberts led the way with a 13th place finish time of 25:36.
The Viking boys did not post a team score but were led by Zooey Allen’s 44th place time of 26:02.
East Mills’ boys squad placed eighth with a score of 186. Walter Seipold led the way with a 20th place finish.

Red Oak tops field at SW Valley Invite
The Red Oak boys continued its strong running by winning the team title at the Southwest Valley Invitational Cross Country Meet Thursday at Lake Icaria.
The Tigers took full advantage of the race being trimmed to 4-kilometers from 5-kilometers due to the heat with Emmanuel Grass and Hayden Heitbrink finishing first and second.
The team title is Red Oak’s second straight. Their 33 points outpaced runners up Martendale St. Marys’ 43 points.
The Tigers’ Grass ran a 13:39 to outpace teammate Heitbrink by 36 seconds in the boys race. Osiel Pederson was sixth, Pace Chaillie 16th and Cale Hall was 26th.
“It was another great night for our Tigers,” said Red Oak coach Sueann French. “The boys came out with another win. Cale Hall stepped it up tonight. We were missing our fourth runner due to illness and Cale stepped right in. The team worked hard as a team.”
Maddy Lopez led the Red Oak girls with a 22nd place finish. Gillian Heim was 36th, Cate Horn was 38th and Jaide Larson was 44th. The Tiger girls did not have enough runners to qualify for a team score.
The host Timberwolves placed seventh at their meet.
Matthew Means led the way with a 21st place finish overall in a time of 16:04.  A quartet of juniors finished in the second through fifth positions, with Ashton Boswell finishing 29th, Lucas James 57th, Brody Sparks 61st and Quaid Eddy 62nd.
“Because the race was shortened to a 4K, we really can’t compare times for this season and last season on this course,” said Southwest Valley coach Jason Hults. “But I felt like the boys ran hard under the conditions and put forth a good effort.”
Griswold’s Holden Jensen placed third in the boys race with a time of 14:10.40, while teammate Cody Dorscher was seventh.
Caitlyn Crouse finished eighth in the girls race to lead East Mills.
