Tigers edge Lewis Central for Hawk-10 title
The Red Oak cross country team edged Council Bluffs Lewis Central down the final stretch to capture the boys team title at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Cross Country Meet Thursday at Shenandoah High School.
Red Oak tallied 71 points to get by the Titans by two points. The Tigers’ No. 5 runner, Bryce Williams, passed two runners near the finish line to help secure the championship
The conference title is believed to be Red Oak’s first since 1982.
“Coach (Weston) Rolenc and I are thrilled for these boys,” said Red Oak head coach Sueann French. “They have worked hard as a team and it has paid off. We knew it would be a tough race with Lewis Central. They’ve beaten us twice and we beat them once (this season). We believed and did it. This really gets our minds ready for state qualifying. Everyone is all in and focused for next week.”
Emmanuel Grass led Red Oak with a third place finish time of 16:24. The Titans’ Kevin Coots and Evan Lillie were first and second, respectively, atop the boys field.
The Tigers’ Hayden Hietbrink added a sixth place finish, Osiel Pedersen was 12th, Casey Johnson 21st and Williams rounded out the scoring with his 29th place showing.
Harlan won the girls team title with 53 points. Glenwood was the runner up with 65 points.
The Red Oak girls, who did not register a team score, were led by Cate Horn’s 53rd place time of 25:50. Leya Walker added a 59th place finish, Gillian Heim was 61st and Gabby Smith 64th.
The Tigers are back in action Thursday at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet in Central College in Pella. The race begins at 4 p.m.
