SW Valley track competes in Mount Ayr

The Southwest Valley girls and boys track teams travelled to the Chet Roed Co-ed Relays in Mount Ayr last Tuesday.
Running in what was the best weather of the season so far, the Timberwolves set three new school records on the boys side and brought home three first place finishes overall.  The boys finished the night in fourth place in the team standings with 56 points, and the girls finished ninth with 15 points.
The host Mount Ayr won the team title with a score of 116, and Interstate 35 won the girls crown with a 165.
Starting the gold medal efforts for the Timberwolves was Mackenzie Richards in the girls shot put with an outdoor season best effort of 35 feet, 3 inches.
The boys relays brought home two gold medals of their own.
The distance medley relay set a new school record on their way to the victory with a time of 3:51.57 running Walker Bissell, Brody Crozier, Wyatt Mendenhall, and Ian Forsythe.  The boys 4x100-meter relay ran a season best time of 45.26 in the quartet of Wyatt Shires, Crozier, Gavin Wetzel and Mendenhall.
The Timberwolves’ boys set two more records on silver medal performances.
Crozier lowered his own school record in the 100-meters for the third time this season, setting a new time to beat of 11.36 to take second place in Mount Ayr.  The Shuttle Hurdle relay team of Mendenhall, Bissell, Riley Hartman, and Wetzel lowered their school record for the second time this season, with a new time of 1:05.5 in their silver medal run.
“It was a lot of fun to watch the boys set those records in three consecutive events,” said Southwest Valley coach Jason Hults. “All three of those events put the Timberwolves in a great position to have a chance to qualify for state with three weeks to go till the qualifying meets. The boys just need to keep working hard, continue to improve, and we will get the opportunity to see them on the blue oval.”
Other medalists for the Timberwolves included Wetzel taking second place in the high jump and Bissell grabbing third in the same event.  Mendenhall added a fourth place medal in the 400-meter hurdles, and Richards added a fourth-place medal in the girls discus with a new personal-record.
