Stanton-Essex opens season with comeback win

Stanton-Essex rallied from a 10-0 first quarter deficit in a 34-23 win over Seymour Friday in Stanton.
The season-opening win was the Vikings’ first since opening the 2022 season with a win over Martensdale St. Marys.
“Seymour is a bunch of warriors,” said Stanton coach Jeff Grebin. “We knew that from last year and they had their core back this year, but they were only able to play eight guys start to finish.  They were exhausted.  Our kids were worn down too, but at least we could rotate a few in and out to get a rest.”
Seymour marched down the field to take the early 8-0 lead and then extended the lead to 10-0 on a Warrior safety after the Vikings recovered their own fumble in the endzone.
The Vikings stepped up on both sides of the ball in the second quarter to take a 20-16 lead into the half. Owen Marsh stripped the ball from a Seymour running back and took it 40 yards for a defensive touchdown and Noah Marsh caught a 39-yard TD pass in the frame. 
The second half was a battle, Grebin said, but the Vikings prevailed allowing only one score late in the fourth quarter.
Nolan Case had a big game under center for the Vikings. The junior threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns and added 27 yards rushing. Jayden Snow and Cooper Dreyer each hauled in TD passes.
Marsh led the Vikings defense with 10 tackles.
Stanton is back in action Friday hosting Griswold on Veteran’s Appreciation Night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
