RO BBB shines with two weekly wins

The Red Oak Tigers basketball teams split wins with St. Albert on Tuesday, Jan. 4, with the boys earning the win over the Falcons (3-5, 2-4).

“Coming back after a two week break, it’s nice to start with a win, but we still have a lot to work on before February gets here,” Red Oak head boys basketball coach Spencer Plank said. “I was proud of the boys for not only starting fast, but then staying tough and getting a gutsy win after the game was tied up in the fourth quarter.”

“We have a lot of really good pieces on this team, both offensively and defensively, and once we get everyone clicking at the same time, we’re going to be a tough matchup for anyone,” Plank said.

Hunter Gilleland proved that as he led all scorers with 22 points to lead the Tigers to a 62-56 conference victory.

“Hunter’s been playing really well recently, but we knew at some point he would become a serious offensive threat,” Plank said. “He spends a ton of time in the gym, so it was only a matter of time.”

RO stats: Gilleland three rebounds, three assists; Ryan Johnson 10 points, four rebounds, one steal; Nic Fouts nine points, four rebounds, one assist; Kaden Johnson seven points, 14 rebounds, two assists; Max DeVries seven points, seven rebounds; Bradley Sifford four points, seven rebounds, four assists, one steal;  Brayden Sifford three points, one rebound, three assists; Braden Woods three rebounds.

Red Oak girls fell to St. Albert (6-3. 4-1) 58-11, dropping to 0-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

“It is surprising and pleasant to see them still working so hard,” Red Oak head girls basketball coach Cliff Owen said.

RO stats: Merced Ramirez five points, one rebound, one steal; Lainey DeVries four points, three rebounds; Maddie Doyle two points, one rebound, one steal; Olivia Bozwell one rebound; Payten Bass two rebounds, one steal; Lennon O’Neal three rebounds, one steal; Jaydin Lindsay five rebounds, one steal.

Sioux City North

The Red Oak boys (5-4, 3-4) hosted Sioux City North (1-8) on Friday, Jan. 7, defeating the Stars 58-47.

The Tigers were up 13-12 at the end of the first period and held a 27-22 lead at the halftime. The Stars came back in the third period and knotted the score at 33, but the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to finish out the quarter and led 43-35 heading into the final eight minutes of play, and the Stars could not get closer than within seven points.

“When Sioux City North took the lead in the third quarter, the boys could have folded,” Plank said. “However, we talk all the time about how basketball is a game of runs, so in the timeout I just challenged them to respond with a run of their own, which they did.”

Gilleland finished with 16 points on four treys to lead the Tiger scoring, and K. Johnson finished with a double-double on 14 points, 10 rebounds.

“We talk a lot about drawing two defenders and finding open cutters and shooters, so I was proud to see several plays tonight where we executed in that regard. I think I’m most proud about how many guys stepped up and made contributions, whether it was scoring, rebounding, or defense. It was all hands on deck tonight and a lot of guys were ready to step up when called.”

RO stats: Gilleland six rebounds, two assists, one steal ; K. Johnson two assists, one steal; R. Johnson 12 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals; DeVries eight points, seven rebounds, one assist; Fouts two points, two rebounds; Jack Schmadeke two points, four rebounds, two assists; Bradley Sifford two points, two rebounds, one assist; Braden Woods two points, five rebounds; Bryton Bergren two rebounds.

Both Tiger teams travel to Shenandoah tonight for a Hawkeye 10 double-header beginning with a girls tip at 6 p.m.
