Red Oak girls eighth at West Central Valley

The Red Oak girls secured five individual medals and finished eighth among 17 teams at the West Valley Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Stuart.
Kuemper Catholic captured the team title with 136 points. Clarinda was the runner up with 130 points. The Tigers tallied 87 points.
Jlynn Vasquez (100 pounds), Amber Rea (135), Jadeyn McAlpin and Janae Schwery (235) all earned third place medals in Atlantic.
Elaina Kuipers (120) added a fifth-place medal.
Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska said his team had a “great day on the mat with pretty much all of them placing at or well above their seed.”
“We know we have an extremely tough schedule especially to start the year, so this was a great reminder to them that we do those things so the second half and even sometimes the postseason are easier then tournaments we’ve already had,” Podliska said. “Jlynn is figuring out what we’ve been trying to tell her, that she’s a pretty darn tough wrestler when she believes she is.
“Elaina and Amber are seeing the benefits of spending a lot of time in the room during the spring and summer. Jadeyn is realizing when she’s more under control mixed with the danger she can bring in some positions good things will happen. Janae did a good job rebounding after seeing her first loss of the season.”

Tiger girls 2-0, boys 0-3 at Glenwood
The Red Oak girls and boys wrestling teams traveled to Glenwood for a series of duals Thursday.
The Tiger girls were 2-0 on the night with wins over Shenandoah 45-12 and the host Rams 40-36. The Red Oak boys dropped its three duals to Glenwood 78-3, Council Bluffs Lewis Central 69-12 and Shenandoah 48-23.
Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska said it was a night of “ups and downs.”
“Our boys need to realize that when you’re outmatched you need to make adjustments,” Podliska said. “If someone is taking you down and letting you up, then take that as an opportunity to try something. Try to slow it down and trust your fundamentals when you’re overwhelmed.  I thought our girls did well, we won a lot more contested matches in these two duals then we did last year. We have to be more aware of some things our opponents are trying defensively and use them to our advantage.”
The Tigers’ Jlynn Vasquez (100-pounds), Izzy Kraus (115), Amber Rea (135), Torrie McFarland (145) and Janae Schwery (235) had 2-0 nights in Glenwood.
“There were some forfeits in there for some, but as we say control what you can control,” Podliska said. “And even when you lose, you beat everyone  who doesn’t show up, weigh-in, and toe the line.”
Dayton Gusman (150) was the lone Red Oak boy to win all three of his matches on the night. Izic Zarate (113) added a pair of victories.

The Red Oak wrestling team picked up a win over Council Bluffs St. Albert and dropped two duals in a quadrangular at Clarinda last Tuesday.
The Tigers knocked off the Falcons 42-30 and took their losses to Southwest Valley 47-26 and the host Cardinals, 42-34.
“We went 13-12 in contested matches and scored a lot of bonus points,” said Red Oak coach Tiegen Podliska. “We came in knowing that we could pick up three dual wins tonight or we could pick up no dual wins tonight. We talked about being a little short handed, picking up bonus points when we could, and trying to limit theirs.
“The margin for error was small and we didn’t quite meet it in two duals. But we tried to control what we could and the sun will come up tomorrow. I was proud of our effort and our fight and we’ll continue to progress.”
The Tigers’ Carson VanScoy (144), Dayton Gusman (150),  Jared Scriver (175, and Oliver Dykes (285) all went 3-0 on the night.
