Jones to join Red Oak Athletic Hall of Fame

The Red Oak Activities Department is inducting 1980 graduate Elizabeth “Liz” Jones into the Red Oak Athletic Hall of Fame.
Jones was an outstanding multi-sport athlete during her time at Red Oak, lettering in basketball, softball, and track, and becoming one of the Tigers’ first standout volleyball players when the sport was first introduced for girls as a sanctioned sport during her senior year.
Jones will be recognized during the pre-game festivities before the Homecoming football game and marching band performance on Friday, Sept. 25. Her family will also represent her and the Hall of Fame during the Homecoming parade.
Jones passed away in 2009 at the age of 47. Her family will be present to accept the recognition on her behalf as Tiger fans celebrate her outstanding athletic career and lasting legacy in Red Oak.
Jones’ accomplishments were numerous. In basketball, she finished her career with an incredible 1,881 points and set the record for most points in a single game with 68 points, scored against Creston during her senior season. She was a two-time Hawkeye Eight Conference scoring champion.  She was also twice named all-state honorable mention.
In softball, Jones was a four-year letterwinner and earned all-conference honors as a junior and all-state honorable mention as a senior. She was a versatile defensive player who excelled at multiple positions.
In track, Liz was a state qualifier in the two-mile relay, twice placing sixth at the Iowa State Track Meet. She also established multiple school records during her career.
