Griswold, Stanton, SW Valley grab medals at Class 1A state track meet

Griswold’s Carsyn Adams and Stanton’s shuttle hurdle relay along with a pair of Southwest Valley high jumpers grabbed medals at the Class 1A Iowa High School State Track and Field Meet wrapping up Saturday in Des Moines.
Edgewood-Colesburg won the Class 1A girls state with 57 points, eight better than runner-up Mounty Ayr. Defending champion Council Bluffs St. Albert was third with 45 points. Riverside captured the boys title with 51 points. Van Buren was the runner-up with 43 points.
Adams ran a 1:06.89 to place seventh in the 400-meters at state. The junior was eighth in the same event a year ago.
Adams also placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles and ran the anchor leg for the Tigers’ shuttle hurdle relay team that finished 11th. She, along with Sadie Gohlinghorst, Brystol Wyman, and Alexa Steinhoff, ran a 1:10.46.
Wyman added a 20th place time of 17.13 in the 100-meter hurdles and Ella Gade tossed 105’, 5 inches in the discus to pick a 20th place finish.
On the boys side, the Tigers’ Wyatt Silk was 21st in the 110-meter hurdles and joined the shuttle hurdle relay group of Owen Johnson, Callen Keiser and Dain Laverty that placed 15th.
R.J. Dishong added a 15th place finish in the discus with a top throw of 146 feet, 2 inches.
The Stanton girls shuttle hurdle relay team of Quinn McDonald, Lauren Foster-Saye, Lauren Roberts and Piper French ran a 1:09.72 in the finals to place eighth.
Roberts was a part of the Viqueens group of Hannah Olson, Kyla Hart and Lauren Johnson that won gold in the same event a year ago with a state-record time of 1:04.69.
Roberts had a top leap of 4 feet, 10 inches to place 20th in the high jump.
The sprint medley quartet of McDonald, Foster-Saye, Roberts and French were 20th in 4:30.34.
The Vikings’ Brodee Sowers was 16th in the discus after throwing 146 feet, 1 inch.
Southwest Valley girls and boys track teams qualified for nine events at state.
The Timberwolves finished with two boys medalists in the field events and 1.2 points overall.
“Overall, this was a great group of kids who put in a ton of work all season to qualify for the state track meet as some of the best-in-class 1A,” said Southwest Valley coach Jason Hults. “Although we did not come home with as many medals as we were hoping for, only two of the Timberwolves are seniors and the rest have a chance next season to come back and improve on these performances.”
On Friday, Southwest’s Valley Gavin Wetzel, making his third state appearance, and Walker Bissell, returning for his second appearance, both placed seventh in the high jump.
The pair cleared the opening height of 5 feet, 11 inches on their first attempts, then missed at 6 feet, 1 inch on all three attempts, but medaled in a five-way tie for seventh. Paton-Churdan’s Trevon Keely won gold in the event with a top jump of 6 feet, 6 inches.
Wetzel had previously placed 10th at 5-11 in 2024, and the pair tied for 17th at 5 feet, 9 inches in 2025. 
Starting off their state schedule on Thursday, the Timberwolves’ Brody Crozier improved on his 18th place finish in the long jump last year with a 10th place finished and a top jump of 19 feet, 11.75 inches.
Crozier added a 24th place finish in the 200-meters in a time of 23.28 but a false start in the 100-meter led to a disqualification in that event.
Caleb Owen, making his first state track appearances, finished in 19th place overall in the shot with a best throw of 44-6.25. 
“Although not his best performance of the season, Caleb gained valuable experience as a first time State Qualifier that will help him in the next few seasons,” Hults said.
The Timberwolves’ shuttle hurdle team, returning three members from last year’s state qualifying team and hoping to improve on a 24th place performance last year, ran their second fastest time of the year, but did not advance to the finals. The group of Wetzel, Wyatt Mendenhall, Bissell and Wyatt Shires ran a 1:03.93 for 17th place.
 Mendenhall, after not running the 110-meters since his freshman year prior to three weeks ago, finished in 22nd place overall in a time of 15.97. Mendenhall finished 19th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.78.
Mailee Templeton, the Timberwolves girls’ lone state qualifier, ran a 17.65 to place 23rd in the 100-meter hurdles.
“As a first-year runner, Mailee made great strides throughout the season, and we look forward to seeing what she does next year,” Hults said.
East Mills’ Ellie Hagen and Jiri Brodigan both qualified for the 100-meters at state. Hagen finished 19th in 13.40 and Brodigan was 12th in 11.45.
Essex high jumper Isaiah Sholes had a top leap of 5 feet, 11 inches to place 15th.
