Exira-EHK downs East Mills, 46-27
Turnovers and a sputtering offense in the red zone proved costly for East Mills in a 46-27 non-district Eight-player football game in Elk Horn Friday.
The Wolverines turned the ball over four times and had multiple chances inside the Spartans’ 15-yard line but again the offense couldn’t punch it in.
“We had turnover problems; the defense would make some big plays and then give up a big play on third or fourth down,” said East Mills coach Trenton Turney. “We had a lot of explosive offensive plays, but we either stalled or turned the ball over.”
The Wolverines were outgained 309 to 253 and lost the turnover battle 4-0.
“We had some solid hits but still need to continue to wrap up and gang tackle,” Turney said.
The Spartans got a big night from quarterback Bryce Brabham. The senior ran for 111 yards and five touchdowns and passed for 156 yards and another TD.
Mason Camden completed 11-of-20 passes for 108 yards and a TD to lead the Wolverines’ offense. Cooper Hagen slid out from his center position to tight end and hauled in a pair of touchdowns and 88 yards on three catches.
A bright side for Turney was the play of some of his younger players. Freshmen Gabe Blanton and Khayden Poorker both earned their first varsity touchdowns. Poorker’s came on a 53-yard scamper on his lone carry and Blanton hauled in a 13-yard TD pass from Zayne Graybill.
East Mills goes on the road to face Stanton Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
