Freedom Rock to be painted in October

The Freedom Rock in Red Oak’s Fountain Square Park will be painted by artist Bubba Sorensen in mid-October.

Red Oak Park and Tree Board President Bill Drey said a list of ideas and a few photos have been sent to Sorensen, along with contact information for Jerry Hansen, Montgomery County Veterans Affairs Director. Drey added, Sorensen would be down to paint Oct. 14-24.

He added the rock will be sandblasted, and a tent will be placed over the rock. A heater will also be provided, if needed, while Sorensen does his painting.

Also mentioned at the June 11 meeting of the Red Oak Park and Tree Board was the approval of the usage of Fountain Square Park and the shelter house Aug. 15 for the annual Classy Chassis Car Club.

“As of now, there is no cancellation planned, and they are still planning on having the event as scheduled,” said Drey.

A request from the Faith Community Church for the use of Fountain Square Park and Wilson Park for a vacation Bible school July 20 and 21 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. was also approved, pending they follow any recommendations made by the board regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cemetery and park superintendent Irv Ficek gave an update on the status of the Red Oak Municipal Pool. He said the work progress has been very good. Like the City Council, Ficek said it’s uncertain as to the re-opening of the pool following completion of the work.

“I personally don’t see how it would happen. There are few lifeguards, and the inspector is behind schedule. I don’t expect to see it open this year,” Ficek said.

Discussion also took place regarding the retirement of Ficek. Current plans are for Ficek to retire at the end of the year, and potentially work part-time after retirement.
