Extra caution for area first responders

When emergency first responders arrive on a scene, their main concern is helping the person in need. While others are running away from danger, it’s our first responders who are running toward it, so how are they taking precautions against COVID-19?
Red Oak Fire Chief John Bruce said several guidelines have been implemented to keep fire and rescue personnel as safe as possible during this time. They include: 911 response and initial patient assessment, recommended personal protective equipment, patient care treatment guidelines, transport, cleaning of ambulance, follow up and reporting and special notes.
“It starts with the dispatcher taking the initial information, then getting that to the EMS responding crew. That way they can take appropriate measures to ensure the proper protective equipment is in place before interaction with the patient,” explained Bruce. “It is imperative that the individual speaking to the dispatcher provide them accurate and complete information that is being asked.”
He added, fire and rescue squads are updated daily by Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency, as well as Montgomery County Public Health with current trends and various assessments they have information on concerning the virus in or around our area.
“Plus, they update us on any changes that have been suggested or implemented concerning emergency responses,” Bruce said.
Additionally, Bruce said they are limiting EMS personnel contacts, so they don’t encounter the possibility of multiple providers being exposed to the virus. Potential exposure has also been reduced by limiting access to the fire station by the public.
“We are in emergency services so we do not get to close the doors. We still have to respond to the calls; however, the calls are being evaluated and our response procedures change with updated information,” he explained.
Lastly, with personnel protective equipment in very short supply, Bruce said they want to make sure it is being utilized to the best of our ability.
“The supply companies are currently saying 30 to 60 days out before delivery. However, Montgomery County Emergency Management has sent in requests for PPE equipment to the state, so that may speed up or allow us to obtain that equipment even quicker.”
Red Oak Police Chief Justin Rhamy and his officers are also taking extra precautions during COVID-19.
“Just as in every public safety entity we are doing our best to reduce possible exposure to the COVID-19,” said Rhamy.
He added they will do their best to keep the recommended six-foot social distancing aspect; limit entry in homes; use proper protective equipment; routinely and frequently disinfect their work spaces and vehicles to the best of their abilities, as well as the multitude of equipment they use daily.
The Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center is on restricted access. Authorized personnel are currently the only ones with access. If someone would like to speak with an officer, they are encouraged to call 712-623-6500 or enter into the secured front foyer area where they will find a call box, that call box rings into our communication center, which will then advise officers the situation and they will come out and speak with you.
