Essex District reports first COVID-19 case

Essex Superintendent Mike Wells has announced the Essex District has one confirmed positive COVID-19 student case at the Essex High School. Wells said the district has been working with Page County Public Health to notify students who have been identified as close contacts.

"This case was self-reported and the individual took recommended steps to ensure the safety of others. The student is at home recovering and will not return to school until the isolation period has expired and symptoms have improved," Wells said. "As a means to avoid the potential spread of the virus, contact tracing for exposure is in progress in order to communicate with any individuals requiring a quarantine. Any student who was in close contact, will receive a phone call from Page County Public Health. Staff meetings have been scheduled with Elizabeth Shirley (school nurse), Page County Public Health, and administration.

Wells added the district will continue to follow COVID protocol which requires all people to wear masks throughout the building, on busses, and at activities. We will continue to check the temperatures of all people entering our schools.

"We want everyone to know the Essex staff has been diligent in creating a safe and healthy learning environment and will continue to take steps to limit exposure to the COVID virus," said Wells.
