Effie Mewhirter, 100, of Atlantic

Effie Susanna Maxell was born in Pilot Grove Township, Montgomery County, on Aug. 11, 1908, to John Albin and Anna Wilhelmina (Hult) Maxwell.

She and her six siblings were baptized and confirmed at Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wallin. She graduated from Red Oak High School.

On Aug. 30, 1928, she married Lee Allen Mewhirter in Methodist parsonage in Atlantic. To this union were born four sons. The Mewhirters farmed near Atlantic and moved to Elliott in 1961. The past eight years, Effie lived at Heritage House.

Effie was a member of Elliott United Methodist Church, O.N.O. Club and the Research Club in Elliott.

Preceding Effie in death were her parents, husband Lee on Feb. 3, 1988, and siblings and/or their spouses, John (Lucille) Maxell, Marion (Maxine) Maxell, Clarence Maxell, Minnie Maxell, Helen (Don) Thomason, and Don Beck.

She is survived by sons, Tom (Betty) of Chapel Hill, N.C., Joe (Barbara) of Atlantic, Jack (Donna) of Indian Shores, Fla., and Jim (Martha) of Vancouver, Wash.; Ruth Beck of Lawrence, Kan., and one sister-in-law, Iona Maxell of Stanton; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Visitation preceded the funeral service Wednesday, Nov. 26, at Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold. Pastor Gary Degeest of First United Methodist Church of Atlantic officiated. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Elliott.
