Community rallies around Sheriff Joe
Members of the Red Oak community and others around Southwest Iowa were on hand to show their support to Montgomery County Sheriff Joe Sampson.
A benefit was held for Sampson at the White Fair building in order to raise money for Sampson’s medical expenses for his treatment for prostate cancer.
A free will offering dinner was provided, as well as a live and silent auction. Red Oak Police Chief Justin Rhamy, who was one of the many emergency responders who helped coordinate Sampson’s benefit, said the turn-out for the benefit was well over 1,000.
“I know that we went through 1,500 plates, and I also know that there were several that did not eat as well,” Rhamy said.
Rhamy added the community members were very generous to Sampson.
“I am not certain that we will ever possibly be able to know the final amount of money ever raised, as we have a milk crate sized basket with cards for Joe and Margaret that I guarantee, each one has money in. Joe and Margaret will open them all in the coming days,” commented Rhamy.
Rhamy said the overwhelming support for Sampson was very touching.
“I know I am extremely overwhelmed with the turnout. It was absolutely fabulous. I know there were many tears shed by Joe and Margaret and the rest of the family that night,” said Rhamy.
Like Rhamy, Samspon said he was overwhelmed by the public’s support.
“It was quite overwhelming, it was awesome. You really can’t quite put into words how it feels to live and work in a community like this where everybody comes together for an event such as that was,” said Sampson.
Sampson added he and wife Margaret were very grateful.
“Margaret and I both feel very blessed over it. We could just feel the love and the prayers that were with everybody that night.” Sampson said.
