Above the Rest

SHENANDOAH—The Stanton Viqueens basketball team made their debut as the new No. 1 team in 1A Friday night with a win over Shenandoah, 66-33.

“I thought we came out and we had a little bit better start than we had the last couple of games,” Viqueens Head Coach Bruce Subbert said. “I thought we came out with a little more intensity and a little better on the defensive end.”
Stanton exploded for 21 points in the first quarter, with 16 of them coming from Kadie Subbert.
“They gave [Kadie] some good looks on the three-point line and she knocked them down,” Subbert said.
The Viqueens dropped 23 more points on the Fillies in the second quarter, spreading the ball around for all to score. Stanton led at halftime, 44-20.
The offense slowed down in the second half, but the Viqueens defense kept the Fillies from scoring. Stanton outscored Shenandoah in the second half 26-13.
“I told them after the game I thought we really moved the ball really well on the offensive end and I was glad to see us shoot the ball when we had good open shots,” Subbert said. “When we had the shots, we put them up.”
Subbert finished the night leading the Viqueens in scoring with 25 points. Kara Allen was the next highest scorer for Stanton, finishing with nine points.
Tuesday night, the Viqueens defeated South Page, 89-14, at home. After leading 12-2 at the end of the first quarter, Stanton outscored South Page 35-0 in the second, to take a 47-2 lead at halftime.
South Page scored 12 points in the second half, nine of those points in the fourth quarter. The Viqueens forced South Page to turn the ball over 36 times.
Four Stanton players scored double-digit points, with two of them outscoring South Page. Carmen Subbert led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Sederburg added 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
Kadie Subbert and Rachel Sorensen combined for 23 points on the night.
After playing Corning on Monday night, the Viqueens head to Villisca to play the Blue Jays Tuesday night.
Subbert said he thought Villisca was a nice team last year and knows they’re going to be better than they were then.
“We just have to play really good team defense, whether we’re playing man up or zone or using our presses,” he said.
Stanton is home Friday night as they face Essex.
