Weapons threat at high school ‘not credible’

The schedule got off to a rocky start for the Red Oak High School on Friday.

Superintendent Tom Messinger said before the start of the George Maher Day of Service, a threat of weapons was made to Red Oak Police.

“There was a phone call to the police department that someone was going to bring a gun to school,” Messinger said.

Authorities investigated the claim, which was eventually determined to be unfounded.

“Police investigated the threat, and as a result of the investigation, they determined it was not credible,” commented Messinger.

Despite the investigation, Messinger said the district and the police department decided to take precautions.

“We wanted to make sure we were protecting the safety of the students at the school. We had three police officers with wands search the students and their backpacks, and all the students entered through the same door.”

According to Messinger, there were no issues with students during the search process.

“Everyone cooperated extremely well. There was no disruption to the school day, and nothing was thrown out of routine as a result of it,” Messinger advised.

He added he was grateful to the Red Oak Police Department for their assistance in the matter.

“The police department did a great job of providing resources to make sure that everything was safe.”
