Viqueens volleyball on winning ways

SHENANDOAH — The Stanton Viqueens won both of their matches in Shenandoah Saturday.

Stanton defeated Bedford 25-21, 16-25 and 15-9 and then defeated Shenandoah 25-15 and 25-12.

On Thursday, Stanton defeated the Clarinda Academy in Clarinda, 3-0.

The final score was 25-7, 25-5 and 25-4.

The Viqueens had 14 kills for the match, with Erin Dekay leading the team with four out of seven attempts.

Ragen Anderson had seven assists and six serving aces.

Stanton picked up another win last Tuesday night when they defeated the East Mills Wolverines in Malvern 3-1.

The Viqueens struggled early as East Mills jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first game, growing to 12-4.

Stanton rallied and scored five straight points to cut East Mills lead to 12-9. The Viqueens tied the match several times in the first game, even taking the lead at 18-17. However, Stanton scored one point the rest of the game as East Mills won the first game 25-19.

“East Mills came to play and we didn't,” Viqueens  Head Coach J. Browning said.

After trading points in the second game, the Viqueens jumped out to an 8-4 lead. Stanton's lead soon ballooned to 22-7. A Kara Allen kill clinched the second game, tying the match at 1-1. The Viqueens won the game 25-8.

In game three, the Viqueens had a five-point lead early and built upon their lead. Stanton won the third game, 25-13.

Both teams traded points again at the start of the fourth game. Stanton jumped ahead with an eight-point run, leading to a 20-8 lead. East Mills scored four consecutive points to cut Stanton's lead to 21-12.

The Wolverines attempted another rally, but fell short as Stanton won the fourth game, 25-16.

“They're a much improved team,” Browning said. “We have to learn to hit around the blocks.”

Rachel Sorensen led the Viqueens with 13 kills on 28 attempts. Sorensen also had 11 digs, two blocks and five serving aces.
Subbert had nine kills and 11 digs for the Viqueens.
