Viqueens get to 9-0 for season
The Stanton and East Mills basketball teams split their doubleheader to close out the 2013 portion of the season Friday night in Malvern.

The Viqueens remain undefeated following their 58-20 win against East Mills.
Stanton (9-0) started the game with an 11-2 run. A three-pointer by Jessie Doyle temporarily halted the run.
Stanton scored 10 more points from there, including a Carmen Subbert three-pointer, following an East Mills timeout, to take a 21-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Viqueens defense kept East Mills from scoring, while building their lead further and further. By halftime, Stanton’s lead was 37-14.
In the second half, East Mills scored six points, including two in the fourth quarter. Stanton was able to get up by 35 points during the fourth quarter, putting the mercy rule clock into effect.
Subbert led the way for Stanton with 28 points on 12-for-18 shooting, with eight rebounds and three assists. Subbert was the only Viqueen to record double-digit points.
Sara Sederburg was next with nine points, as well as three rebounds. Heidi Vanderholm scored six points off the bench for the Viqueens.
Macy Elwood and Erin Sorensen each scored four points for the Viqueens.
Boys
East Mills won the second half of the doubleheader to reach a 6-1 record before the break, thanks to a 53-42 victory against the Vikings.
Both teams swapped the lead early in the first quarter, before Jacob Schafer scored the final four points, to give the Wolverines a 13-9 lead at the end of one.
Stanton’s David Sorensen started the second quarter with a three-pointer to cut the lead to one point. However, Schafer sank a three-pointer, while Keegan Wederquist was fouled on a bucket and made the free throw, to give East Mills a 19-12 lead.
The Wolverines stayed ahead thanks to Wederquist, who finished the game with 14 points. Schafer scored the final points for East Mills, including a three-pointer with seconds remaining before the half, to take a 29-21 lead.
Stanton tried to close the gap during the third quarter, but points by Wederquist, Logan Currin and Gabe Barney, kept them trailing by 13 with less than two minutes to go.
Sorensen was able to hit a pair of three-pointers to get Stanton within 10 points. East Mills led at the end of three, 42-31.
Scoring slowed down during the fourth quarter as the Wolverines stayed ahead to get the win. Schafer was the leading scorer for the game, recording 18 points. Currin finished the game with 11 points.
For Stanton, Kyle Peterson led the way with 11 points and seven rebounds. Brady Johnson had 10 points with five rebounds. David Sorensen had nine points, all coming on three-pointers. Alex Becthold scored seven points.
Stanton 75, Clarinda Academy 17
The Viqueens jumped out to a 28-4 lead in the first quarter last Tuesday at home and never looked back with their win against Clarinda Academy.
Subbert led the way with 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting with six rebounds. Sederburg had 11 points for Stanton with six steals. Lauren Stephens scored 10 points off the bench and had seven rebounds with five assists. Elwood and Vanderholm each scored seven points, while Moriah Kammerer finished with six for the game.
Haley Weis scored eight points and had five rebounds off the bench for Stanton.
Stanton is done until Jan. 9 when they travel to Tabor to take on the Fremont-Mills Knights.
Clarinda Academy 64, Stanton 28
The Vikings fell behind in the first quarter as Clarinda Academy stayed ahead in last Tuesday’s game.
Clarinda Academy outscored Stanton 22-12 in the first quarter. Stanton scored 16 points during the next three quarters.
Stanton struggled with shooting, going 14-for-65 from the field.
Johnson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for the Vikings. David Sorensen had six points and five rebounds, while Peter Sorensen had four points and four rebounds.
Peterson scored six points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Stanton returns to action Jan. 9 when they take on Fremont-Mills.
