Viqueens defeated by FM in 1A quarterfinals
STANTON — The Stanton Viqueens basketball season came to a sudden close last Thursday when they were upset by the Fremont-Mills Knights in the 1A Regional Quarterfinals, 59-56, at Stanton High School.
Stanton jumped out to a 13-2 lead in the first quarter, but things changed drastically in the second when Fremont-Mills outscored the Viqueens 21-3, taking a 23-16 lead at halftime. From there, the Knights were able to build on their lead in the third quarter and the lead became 13 points. Stanton rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring 28 points during that time, but weren't able to erase the rest of the deficit.
Carmen Subbert scored 19 points and had a season high of 17 rebounds (11 offensive), as well as five steals to lead the Viqueens.
Ragen Anderson had 14 points on 5-for-14 shooting, four of those made shots being three-pointers. The junior also grabbed seven rebounds, making her the second leading rebounder behind Subbert.
Sara Sederberg had 11 points, four assists and three steals for the Viqueens, all coming off the bench, while Rachel Sorensen had nine points, four rebounds and four assists.
The loss was Stanton's first to Fremont-Mills since Feb. 1, 2008, when the Knights won 46-44. Stanton's loss was their first in the quarterfinals since the 2008-09 season.
The Viqueens finish the 2011-12 season with a 15-7 record.
