Viqueens close regular season with 21st victory

STANTON — The Stanton Viqueens finished the regular season with a 21-1 record after they defeated South Page in the last game before regionals, last Tuesday 64-16.

Stanton fell behind early, trailing 5-0 nearly halfway through the first quarter.

The Viqueens picked up the scoring though as they scored 40 straight points to take a 40-5 lead into halftime.

South Page didn’t score again until more than halfway through the third quarter.

Carmen Subbert finished with 19 points and had six rebounds with six steals.

Sara Sederburg scored 13 points with two steals and two assists.

Heidi Vanderholm scored nine points off the bench, while Erin DeKay scored eight and had eight rebounds with four blocks.

The win for Stanton gives them not only an undefeated conference season (the Corner Conference tournament doesn’t count in the conference record), but they’re also the outright regular season conference champions.

The Viqueens face Sidney in the quarterfinals to begin the 1A regional tournament Tuesday. The action kicks off at 7 p.m. at Stanton High School.

The winner of the game will play the winner of Essex/Fremont-Mills Friday night at Red Oak High School. Start time for the regional semifinal is scheduled for 7 p.m.
