Villisca softball loses to Corner Conference leaders

Coming into last week, Coach Jim Obermeier knew it was going to be a tough week for the Villisca Blue Jays softball team.

“We have both Stanton and (Fremont-Mills), who are the top of the conference,” Obermeier said. “It’s going to be a good test here at the end of the season.”

Monday night, the Blue Jays went to Stanton, who was tied for second in the Corner Conference standings.

“We hit the ball well,” Obermeier explained. “We just didn’t get enough hits at the right times.”

The Blue Jays fell to the Viqueens, 8-6.

Next Villisca traveled to South Page, where their bats came alive with 14 hits, winning 17-6. Shayney Scott also pitched a complete game and struck out nine Rebel batters.

Wednesday, the Blue Jays met another of the Corner Conference’s leaders when they played Fremont-Mills.

The Blue Jays hung with the Knights for the first three innings, only trailing 4-3 after the third, but the Knights’ hitting picked up and pitcher Mindy Lorimer struck out 13 batters to beat the Jays, 16-3.

“They just put together some strings of hits,” Obermeier said, “and we just couldn’t keep up with them.”

The week’s finale was at Hamburg.

The Blue Jays bounced back from the night before with 10 runs on 11 hits in five innings. Villisca won 10-0 at Hamburg.

Villisca ends the week with an 11-9 record.
