Villisca knocks off Red Oak

VILLISCA — The high school boys basketball season got underway Wednesday, Nov. 26, with two local teams facing off in the Villisca High School Jamboree.
Villisca boys faced Red Oak in the event that featured six teams from Southwest Iowa.
Despite the disparity in the sizes of the high schools,ee^Villisca knocked off Red Oak 26-19.
Ryan Focht led the way for Villisca, putting 11 points on the board.
Other scorers for the Bluejays included Nathan Cordon, 4 points, Eli Cordon and Joel Herzburg, 3, and Tim Myers, 2.
Only three players put points on the board for the Tigers — Cody Walford, 8, Dakota White, 7 and Matt Goracke, 4.
Villisca head coach Jim Obermeier said his team looks good heading into the season.
“We open Thursday against Bedford,” he said. “It’ll be a real competitive game.”
Bedford, a state qualifying team last year, beat Clarinda Academy in the jamboree.
“We watched them,” Obermeier said. “They’ve got a big guy, Tim Schweltzer, in the middle. He’ll be a big challenge for us.”
Obermeier said he also expects Red Oak to have a good season, despite falling to Villisca in the jamboree.
“They will be competitive,” he said. “They didn’t have all that they had (in the jamboree).”
According to Obermeier, Red Oak was missing some key players due to injuries and other issues.
Red Oak plays Clarinda Highee^School at 6:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5.
