Vikings enter baseball districts with two straight victories
STANTON — It’s always good to go into the postseason with a little momentum. That’s precisely what the Stanton Vikings did last week when they scored two wins to close out the baseball regular season.
The most recent win came last Wednesday at home when they defeated Adair-Casey 6-2.
Stanton (9-8) jumped out ahead early thanks to two runs in the first and one in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
They added two more in the fifth inning to make it 5-0. Adair-Casey tried to close the gap with two runs in the top of the sixth, but Stanton added one more run for insurance purposes as they pulled out the win.
Eighth grader Donnie Weis picked up his third win of the season on the mound for Stanton. Weis went five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits.
The leading hitter of the game was David Sorensen, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI.
Brady Johnson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Reece Anderson also went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs.
Connor Hultman, Dustin Usaacson and Cameron Walter all went 1-for-3, while Drake Johnson was 1-for-4.
The other win came last Tuesday when Stanton defeated East Union in Afton 7-6.
East Union struck first with three runs to take a 3-0 lead after one. Stanton scored two in the second, but trailed 3-2. They scored two more in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. East Union tied it in the fifth to make it 4-4.
The difference was the sixth inning when Stanton scored three runs to take a 7-4 lead. East Union scored two in the bottom half of the sixth, but it wasn’t enough as Stanton held on for the win.
Sorensen once again was the leading hitter as he went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
Hultman scored two runs and had a stolen base as he went 3-for-4.
Drake Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Walter, Brady Johnson, Jacob Lindgren and Anderson all went 1-for-4.
Weis also scored the win for Stanton against East Union, going four innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits.
The Vikings now turn their attention towards the district tournament. They’ll be playing in District 14 of Class 1A.
Stanton will play their quarterfinal game Tuesday night in Lenox when they play Bedford. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
Should Stanton win, they would play the winner of Lenox/East Union Thursday at 7 p.m. in Lenox.
The district final will take place Saturday at Martensdale-St. Marys at 7 p.m.
