UPDATED: Weather Watch: Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect

UPDATE: Montgomery County is under a severe thunderstorm warning until 6:15 p.m. Meteorologists at NWS reported a storm capable of producing quarter-sized hail and winds as fast as 60 miles per hour, was detected near Elliott moving South at 25 miles per hour.

Locations impacted include Red Oak, Stanton Villisca, Coburg and Viking Lake State Park.

RED OAK — The Storm Prediction Center out of Norman, Okla. has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Southwest and West Central Iowa.

The watch, which was issued around 1:30 p.m., is currently in effect until 9 p.m. Montgomery, Mills, Page and Cass Counties are under the watch. The watch stretches as far East as Creston and as far North as Highway 20 around Storm Lake and Sioux City.

Severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect around Denison and Sioux City. Most of this activity is moving Southeast from South Dakota.

There's a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for the rest of the afternoon. Temperatures will be warm and the air will be humid. As of 2 p.m., the temperature was 84 in Red Oak.

There is a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for tonight, with some of them likely being severe. The chances of the storms are likely to be later in the night.
