COUNCIL BLUFFS – East Mills’ Jake Doyle, Stanton’s Jordan Sorensen and Alex Whigham, and Essex’s Joscelyn Coleman were all invited to play in the 14th Annual Daily Nonpareil's Southwest Iowa All Star basketball game Sunday.
The exhibition includes players from all classes from 1A-4A in a “small schools versus big schools” match-up.
On the girls side, the big schools, classes 3A and 4A, beat the small schools 71-64.
Sorensen scored two points and pulled down three rebounds in her final high school contest.
Laura Steinhauer of Clarinda was a representative of the “Bigs”, while Treynor’s Tayler Geer and Nichole Easton played with Sorensen on the "Smalls."
“It was hard to play with people that I didn’t know,” Sorensen said after the game. “I was pretty tired from playing all day yesterday, but today was fun.”
Sorensen took part in Stanton’s March Mayhem, a basketball tournament that ran through Saturday.
Coleman, the All-State senior did not participate in the game.
Whigham and Doyle found the task of the “"Smalls"” was just as challenging as they faced All Stars from Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Lewis Central and Harlan.
Whigham scored nine while hitting two of four from the line in the 100-51 loss.
Doyle, hit one of six three-point buckets while scoring five points for his squad.
Trevin Taylor of Thomas Jefferson and Tyler McGrain of Lewis Central led the way for the winning “Bigs,” scoring 14 points each.
