Two injured after high speed chase in the county

The Express Staff

A high speed chase on Sunday has left two people injured.

According to Red Oak Police, officers were on a routine patrol at around 7:40 p.m. Sunday evening when they noticed a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GT on G Avenue near Highway 34 driving in excess of the posted speed limit.

The officers began to make a U-turn to conduct a traffic stop when the suspect’s vehicle fled at a high rate of speed northbound on G Avenue, running the stop sign at the intersection of Highway 34.

The vehicle continued northbound on G Avenue from Highway 34 in an attempt to elude the officers. A significant distance between the suspect’s vehicle and the officers patrol vehicle occurred due to the U-turn officers made to conduct the traffic stop. As officers followed northbound on G Avenue, the vehicle was observed in the east ditch of G Avenue at approximately 180th Street.

The driver of the vehicle, Bubba Darwin Mitchell, 24, of Emerson, was transported to University of Nebraska Medical Center by Red Oak Fire and Rescue. A second occupant of the vehicle, an unidentified 3-year-old child, was also transported to UNMC by LifeNet Helicopter. Both individuals were transferred as precautionary measures due to the mechanism of injury. The extent of the injuries are unknown at this time.

Mitchell faces charges of child endangerment, a Class C felony, felony eluding, a Class D felony, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to have a valid driver’s license, failure to maintain control, failure to obey a stop sign, and there is a pending charge of operating while intoxicated. The ROPD is awaiting test results.

The Red Oak Police Department was assisted in the incident and investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office/K9 unit, and the Iowa State Patrol
