Two homers not enough for Tigers SB victory

What was scheduled to be a busy week for Red Oak ball teams turned into a week of postponed and cancelled games.
In softball, Monday’s double-header at Glenwood was moved to Wednesday due to inclement weather, and moved again to Wednesday, June 27, at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.
The scheduled game with Sidney was postponed until Friday, June 29, at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m., and the double-header with Denison-Schleswig at home on Thursday, ended in a postponed game at a date yet-to-be-decided, and a called loss for Red Oak with six completed innings.
The Tigers fell 10-7 after closing a 9-2 gap held midway through the fourth frame.
Lexi Johnson recorded her second homer of the year to start the Tigers off in the fourth inning, but no other runs were made.
The Tigers’ defense held Denison to one run in the fifth, then added four runs with a Kyndal Kells grand-slam homerun to make it a three-run game.
The sixth frame brought some wind, but no runs for either team.
Although Denison added a run in the top of the seventh, the rain began to pour down on the field and the game was called with the completed sixth inning score.
L. Johnson and Alexa McCunn plated two runs each, while Syd Streicher, Maddie Wendt, and Kells each scored one run.
Kuemper
The Tigers split a double-header with Kuemper, taking game one 13-2, and losing a tight game two 12-11.
“We started out strong and scored five runs in the first inning, and continued to score from there on out,” head coach Tristin Johnson said.
Streicher went four for six with three runs, and Chloe Johnson went four for five with two runs.
“Every batter for us had at least one hit,” Johnson said. “It was a solid, all-around game.”
Zoey Welter pitched a complete game, allowing 10 hits and striking out four.
“Game two was a tough loss, as we had the chance to tie and win it late, but just couldn’t pull it out,” Johnson said. “I was proud with the fight we had when we were down 12-8 in the last inning. The girls could have just quit, but they stepped it up a notch and fought back and gave ourselves a chance to win it.”
C. Johnson was three for four with a double and a walk, and two runs scored.
L. Johnson was two for three with two walks.
“Overall, it was a good night of softball with us scoring good amount of runs and our defense playing well,” Johnson said.
Abraham Lincoln Tournament
The Tigers competed in the Abraham Lincoln Tournament on Saturday, finishing fourth.
“This is the highest we have placed in the tournament in the last five years,” Coach Johnson said. “I was really proud of how we played coming off of a short night since we played in Carroll on Friday, and didn’t get home until late. We had to leave early in the morning to make it to our first game. In the past we have struggled with morning games and getting our energy up, but today, even with short rest, we started out the day with high energy.”
The high energy earned the Tigers a 15-0 win over Thomas Jefferson in just four innings.
The Tigers got off to a fast start, scoring six runs in the second inning and continued to knock in the runs.
Kamryn Buntrock went two of four at bats, including a homerun and a single.
Ashlee Young went three of three, all singles, and plated a run each time.
Welter pitched a one-hitter in the four innings.
“We were patient at the plate, and waited for our pitch, which allowed us to take several walks.”
The second game of the day found the Tigers just short, dropping 5-3 to Treynor.
“We struggled early in the game getting bats going, but we played defense well, and kept it close,” Coach Johnson said. “We were down 5-1 in the last inning, and fought hard to give ourselves a chance to win.”
McCunn hit three singles and scored one run; and Streicher hit two singles and scored one run.
Welter pitched six innings, striking out six.
“Zoey fielded her position well, having three ground ball outs and a line out to her,” Coach Johnson said.
The Tigers fell 9-4 to Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the third game of the day.
“We had the lead into the sixth inning, but just ran out of steam,” Coach Johnson said. “Credit to Sergeant Bluff as they hit the ball well in the sixth inning.”
C. Johnson went three for three with a walk , two singles, and a double.
Welter struck out one.
“Zoey pitched very well for having to throw three games,” Coach Johnson said.

Boys
The twice postponed double-header with Glenwood was held Saturday, while the postponed Sidney game and double-header with Denison make-up dates have yet to be decided.
Thursday’s first game with Denison was suspended in the top of the fifth inning of game one with a score of 11-2 in Denison’s favor.
Red Oak’s two runs were scored on a Ryan Messinger two-run homer.
Lewis Central
The Tigers fell to Lewis Central 11-1 in five innings.
Cole Carlson started on the mound, giving up six hits and walking eight in 1 2/3 innings.
Wyatt Sederburg pitched 2 2/3 innings, and struck out two and walked seven.
Garrett Couse, Carter Bruce, and Messinger all singled at the plate.
Hunter McMann scored the lone run for the Tigers.
“Although we played well on defense, we know that we will not win many games giving up fifteen walks,” head coach Mark Erickson said. “Cole and Wyatt showed signs of being very tough when they are in the strike zone.”
Glenwood
The Tigers completed the suspended game at Glenwood on Saturday, falling 10-0 in six innings.
Carlson started the game on Monday, walked four and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings. Colton Kinnison pitched 3 1/3 innings Saturday, walked four and struck out two.
Couse and Zac Guerra singled to lead the Tigers.
The Tigers dropped the second game 10-3.
Jake Echternach, Mitch Johnson, and Bruce split the game on the mound, combining for seven walks and two strikeouts.
Echternach and Kinnison each doubled for the Tigers, and Couse, Bruce, and Sederburg all added singles.
