Trojans baseball scores first win of season

 ESSEX — In their last regular season game, the Essex Trojans baseball team scored its first win of the season when they defeated Clarinda Academy 17-5 Thursday in Essex.

The Trojans (1-19) trailed 5-2 through 1 1/2 innings, but scored three in the bottom of the second and eight more in the third to take a commanding lead.

Essex scored two runs each in the fourth and fifth inning to get the win via the mercy rule.

Cody Davis had the highlight by going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored.

Riley Martin was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Both Shane Franks and Jake Gray each scored two runs, while Cody McClintock and Alex Dailey each scored three.

Dailey got the win for Essex, pitching five innings and giving up five runs (one earned) on six hits and striking out four.

The game was part of a doubleheader as Essex lost the first game 11-10.

Dailey went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while McClintock was 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.

Essex lost their other games last week, falling 11-0 to Griswold and 12-2 to East Mills.

The Trojans were scheduled to play Saturday in districts versus Riverside, but it was postponed.

The game was played Monday night in Sidney.
